Volotea checked baggage: weight, dimensions and prices in 2026

Volotea offers three checked baggage options: 10 kg, 20 kg, or 25 kg, starting from 9 euros on its website. None are included in the standard ticket, and the same bag added at check-in rises to 75 euros.

The airline stands out on a rare point among low-cost carriers: it imposes no size limits on its checked baggage. Only weight matters, with a maximum of 50 kg per passenger distributed across a maximum of five suitcases.

Volotea Checked Baggage Allowance Contracted Weight Size Limit Tolerance for Exceeding
Short Stay Format 10 kg None Up to 32 kg with surcharge
Standard Format 20 kg None Up to 32 kg with surcharge
Long Stay Format 25 kg None Up to 32 kg with surcharge

Volotea's three checked baggage options

Volotea sells its checked baggage by weight tier, not by number of suitcases. You purchase a contracted weight of 10, 20, or 25 kg, the price of which depends on your destination and the time of purchase.

Choosing between 10, 20, and 25 kg

The 10 kg format meets a specific need, also found at Ryanair: checking liquids and items prohibited in the cabin without paying a full allowance, for a weekend trip. The 20 kg covers a classic week, the 25 kg covers long stays or returns with heavy loads.

Be careful with the calculation: the announced weight includes the suitcase itself. For a 10 kg allowance, a rigid suitcase weighing 3.5 kg leaves you with only 6.5 kg of belongings, whereas a 2.2 kg model frees up 7.8 kg. For this short format, the empty weight of your luggage alone accounts for almost a third of the purchased allowance.

Up to 50 kg distributed across five suitcases

Each passenger can check in up to 50 kg of total luggage, distributed across a maximum of five suitcases. This flexibility is useful for a partial move or a return from a long assignment, provided you stay under the 32 kg limit per individual bag. With a traditional airline, the logic is reversed: the number of pieces is regulated, but the price per bag quickly increases, as shown by the cost of checked baggage with Air France.

Volotea checked baggage dimensions: no limit

Volotea imposes no size limits on its checked baggage. This is a real singularity in the low-cost world, where most competitors set a cumulative centimeter limit. easyJet perfectly illustrates the norm from which Volotea deviates, with checked baggage capped at 275 cm cumulative. With Volotea, only weight is controlled, up to 50 kg per passenger.

What does this actually change?

You can bring a very large suitcase without fear of rejection at the sizing gauge, as long as the weight remains within limits. This freedom does not extend to special baggage, bicycles, or musical instruments, which follow their own conditions and must be declared separately. The complete rule is available on Volotea's official website.

A common-sense nuance applies nonetheless: the absence of size limits does not exempt you from choosing a portable format. A 80 cm suitcase filled to 25 kg is still a 25 kg suitcase to carry up a staircase. Our guide on how to choose your suitcase's capacity helps match the volume to the actual weight purchased.

Volotea checked baggage prices: the official price list

Volotea publishes its baggage tariffs, and the difference between online purchase and airport purchase is spectacular. The exact price varies depending on the country of origin, destination, and season, but starting prices are announced.

Volotea Checked Baggage Weight On the website or app At check-in At the boarding gate
10 kg Baggage From 9 euros From 45 euros 65 euros
20 kg Baggage From 14 euros From 75 euros 65 euros
25 kg Baggage From 19 euros From 75 euros 65 euros

The 1 to 5 ratio between website and airport

The key figure to remember is this: a 20 kg bag costs from 14 euros on the website, and from 75 euros if you add it at check-in. That's more than five times the price, for exactly the same bag in the same hold. For a round trip for two, forgetting this can cost over 240 euros.

You can add a bag up to 2 hours 30 minutes before departure, from the website, app, or by managing your reservation. This is the last window for the online rate: once at the airport, you shift to the right-hand column. The table above is what is published on Volotea's official baggage page.

A useful clarification before booking: these amounts are starting prices, and Volotea does not display them identically everywhere. Its baggage page advertises 10 kg from 9 euros, while its service fees page states from 6 euros. The order of magnitude does not change, nor does the ratio between the website and the airport, but only the price displayed in your booking flow, for your route and date, is authoritative.

Excess weight: 12 euros per kilo

The meter starts at 12 euros for the first kilo above your allowance, and it runs up to 32 kg, beyond which Volotea no longer accepts standard checked baggage. Two underestimated kilos therefore cost 24 euros, whereas upgrading from the 20 kg to the 25 kg allowance purchased from home only costs 5 euros.

The calculation consistently works against excess weight. Moving from the 20 kg to the 25 kg tier costs 5 euros more on the website, whereas those same 5 kg paid as excess at the airport cost you 60 euros. Weighing your suitcase at home with a luggage scale, or by standing on a bathroom scale with your suitcase in hand, remains the only time when adjustment is still free.

The Algeria exception: only one bag allowed

On flights to and from Algeria, Volotea limits each passenger to one checked bag, of 10, 20 or 25 kg depending on the chosen option. The cumulative total of up to 50 kg across five suitcases therefore does not apply to these routes.

This restriction is specific and often discovered too late, at check-in. If you are traveling to Algiers or Oran with Volotea, size your single bag accordingly and prioritize the 25 kg tier rather than counting on a second suitcase that will be refused.

Checked baggage or cabin baggage with Volotea?

The choice between checked and cabin luggage isn't just about price. It primarily depends on what you're carrying.

Checked luggage is essential if you're carrying liquids over 100 ml, a full toiletry kit, or sharp objects like a razor or scissors, all of which are prohibited in the cabin. Conversely, your power banks, e-cigarette, and valuable electronic devices must remain with you in the cabin for both security and insurance reasons.

If your trip fits into cabin luggage, the rules differ significantly, and sizing becomes the central criterion. We have detailed these in our guide on cabin baggage with Volotea, which covers dimensions, the under-seat bag, and control at the boarding gate.

Choosing a suitable suitcase for Volotea checked baggage

With Volotea, the absence of size limits shifts the entire focus to weight. The empty weight of your suitcase therefore becomes the primary purchasing criterion, well before volume.

The second criterion is resistance. A checked suitcase endures conveyor belts, sorting drops, and stacking in the hold, treatment that cabin luggage avoids. For 20 or 25 kg allowances, the shell also supports a high load: it's the combination of heavy weight and rough handling that breaks the most fragile models.

That's why our checked suitcases come with a lifetime warranty, including the shell, wheels, and handle. In this segment, durability is the only criterion that truly distinguishes two models offered at the same price.
