The essentials in 4 points
- With low cost carriers, no checked bag is included: Ryanair, Volotea and easyJet charge for it, and so does Transavia on Basic and Smart fares.
- With traditional airlines, one 23 kg bag is usually included, except on the lowest fare: Light at Air France, Economy Basic at Corsair and British Airways.
- Buying online always costs less than at the airport counter. The gap runs from double to triple at Volotea and Transavia.

The rules airline by airline
A 23 kg bag is included on most fares, except the Light fare which flies without hold luggage. Air France publishes no amount: the price only appears when buying the ticket.
One or two bags included depending on class and destination, except on Economy Basic. Amounts vary widely between the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and Africa.
The allowance depends on the ticket and the grid by destination is not published. Bags are capped at 23 kg within the allowance and 158 cm across the three sides. An infant is entitled to one 10 kg checked bag.
The Economy Basic fare flies without a checked bag. Other fares include one 23 kg bag, two in Business and three in First at 32 kg. British Airways measures each side separately, 90 x 75 x 43 cm, rather than the sum of the three dimensions. The price of an extra bag depends on the destination and is not published, but a 23 to 32 kg bag beyond the allowance is charged 75 EUR per leg.
Transavia works on total weight rather than number of pieces: the allowance you buy is shared across your bags, within 32 kg per piece and 50 kg per passenger.

The standard allowance is 23 kg with traditional airlines. The absolute maximum accepted is 32 kg per bag with almost every airline in this guide. Above that, the bag is refused at the counter and must be split.
