The most common format. Goes in the overhead bin. GYL cabin suitcases (55x35x20 cm) fit perfectly in this category.
Low-cost format. Wider but shallower than the standard. Requires a paid option with Ryanair, Vueling and Volotea.
3 cm deeper than Cabin Strict. Wizz Air is very strict on checks: zero tolerance at the gate.
Transavia format. Deeper than Cabin Strict (25 vs 20 cm). Combined weight bag + accessory = 10 kg max. Paid option (14 to 65 EUR).
The most generous format on the market. With EasyJet it requires the Standard Plus or Flexi fare. Iberia includes it in every fare.

Detailed airline rules for cabin baggage
The 12 kg weight is a combined total (suitcase + accessory). Dimensions include handles and wheels. Random checks at departure.
Without the Priority option, only the small bag goes free. Systematic gate-template checks since September 2025. Zero tolerance.
EasyJet has the largest free bag on the market (45x36x20 cm) and the highest weight limit (15 kg). The large cabin bag (56x45x25) is the most generous of the low-cost carriers.
The 10 kg weight is a combined total (small bag + cabin suitcase). With the Basic fare, only the small bag (40x30x20) is included. Frequent checks on full flights.
With the Basic fare, only the small bag goes free. The cabin suitcase is included from the Optima fare upward. Gate penalty: 80 EUR.
Policy similar to Ryanair. The free cabin bag is measured at the gate. Oversize penalty: 65 EUR (sent to the hold).
Air Algerie only allows a single cabin bag, with no extra accessory. Rules tightened in early 2026: strict checks. Hold penalty: 180 EUR.
Long-haul carrier (Caribbean, Reunion, Africa). Generous checked allowance: 2 x 23 kg in Economy. The personal accessory is smaller than average (33x25x20 cm).
One of the most generous airlines in the cabin (56x40x25 cm, included in every fare). In long-haul Business: 2 cabin bags allowed. Watch out for IB5XXX flights (Iberia Express): 55x40x20 cm.
Same dimensions as Air France (Air France-KLM group). The 12 kg weight is a combined total (suitcase + accessory). Dimensions include handles and wheels.
Reputed to be the strictest airline on baggage checks. Zero tolerance at the gate. The 10 kg weight also applies to the free small bag.
Lufthansa Group member: same gauge as Lufthansa (55x40x23 cm, 8 kg). Checks are among the strictest in Europe at Zurich and Geneva, with frequent weighing on long-haul departures. In Business and First: 2 cabin bags of 8 kg each. Same gauge as Wizz Air Priority.
Lufthansa Group member, same rules as SWISS, Austrian and Brussels Airlines. The 8 kg cabin bag and the personal item stay included in every Economy fare, Economy Light included, which only removes the checked bag on European flights.
Extra checks at boarding whenever a bag exceeds the gauge or the weight limit. A non-compliant bag can be sent to the hold free of charge, or put on a later flight depending on available space. Star Alliance Gold members keep the allowance of their travel class.
The 10 kg is a cabin total covering the main bag plus the accessory, and that total does not change in Executive despite the two bags allowed. Gauges are strictly enforced at the airport.
Regular metal-gauge checks at the gate, with non-compliant bags sent to the hold. Same dimensions as Lufthansa and SWISS, from the same group, and the same cabin allowance across the Light, Classic and Flex fares.
Only the 40 x 30 x 15 cm handbag is guaranteed in the cabin: the 56 x 45 x 25 cm bag can be sent to the hold when the lockers fill up. No cabin weight limit is published, you only need to lift the bag unaided. The 23 kg figure applies to checked baggage.
Canadian long-haul carrier. The only airline in this guide with no published cabin weight limit: everything comes down to dimensions. Watch the 23 cm depth, 2 cm below the European standard of 25 cm. Same gauge as Wizz Air Priority.
Only one cabin bag, Business included, where only the weight goes up from 10 to 12 kg. If the overhead bins are full, the bag goes to the hold free of charge as long as it meets the size and weight limits.
In business class the 10 kg is a total across both cabin bags, not a per-bag weight. The official baggage page publishes a single gauge, 55 x 40 x 20 cm, with no extra depth tolerance: a 23 cm case sold as cabin size is 3 cm over.
No published weight limit: passengers must be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin unaided. Since January 2025 the cabin bag is no longer included in the Basic Economy fare on flights within Canada and to the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
An airline-specific gauge, narrower but deeper than the European standard. The cabin bag is included in every fare, Basic included, but inter-island flights on the Simply network are limited to 6 kg.
